Cocoa High found a rival with a Tigers background to become its new boys head basketball coach.

Edwin Jones, a 1986 Cocoa graduate and assistant for Rockledge basketball the last three years, will return to his alma mater to fill the role left open with the retirement of longtime coach James Rowe.

Jones joined new head football coach Ryan Schneider and athletic director T.J. Gaudy as key additions to the school’s athletic staff.

Jones, who has coached AAU basketball for three decades, also spent 10 years running McNair Middle School boys basketball. There, his teams won five county championships and eight division titles.

In addition to “coming home,” to the school where he played basketball himself, Jones said he was attracted by the addition of seventh and eighth grade to Cocoa in recent years, and part of his focus will be on building the middle school team “to create a steady foundation.”

Gaudy, who filled the athletic director position vacated when John Wilkinson decided to leave the head football job for New Smryna Beach, coached the Tigers baseball team for seven years.
