Trenton (29-0) makes long awaited return to title game

For the first time in 36 years, Trenton is in position for a state championship in girls basketball.

Ranked No. 1 and undefeated, Trenton kept alive its perfect season and its title hopes with a 45-34 victory over Santa Rosa Beach South Walton in the Class 1A state semifinal on Tuesday at The Lakeland Center.

“It’s a great thing for the community,” Trenton head coach Bryant Frye said. “We’ve had wonderful community support. The football program just won a state championship, so everyone’s jumping on the bandwagon with us.”

Trenton will face Madison County in the 1A championship game at 5:05 p.m. today.

The Tigers (29-0) relied on defense and rebounding to take care of the No. 2 Seahawks (26-4). Trenton forced 22 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 40-35.

“We typically rely on the other team turning the ball over,” Frye said. “We had a little bit of difficulty at first, but (in the second half) when we started getting turnovers we started getting back to our game.”

Neither team shot the ball particularly well, but Trenton’s rebounding advantage proved to be the difference.

The Tigers were dominant on the offensive glass, grabbing 23 rebounds, which allowed them to offset their 31 percent shooting from the floor.

Trenton led 26-22 at halftime and clamped down inside to hold South Walton to just 12 second-half points.

“We got out-hustled,” South Walton coach Kevin Craig said. “Offensive rebounding, we just got killed by them. They were much more physical than us. That really was the name of the game.”

Trenton was led by Emmarrie Carmen with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while South Walton got 12 points and 10 rebounds from Allee Coble.
