Clearwater’s Shaneyfelt Logs 700 Wins
Clearwater boys basketball coach Tom Shaneyfelt made his mark his mark guiding the girls program. That is the reason he has already been inducted into the school’s hall of fame and was inducted into the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches Court of Legends last month.
But Shaneyfelt also has done a good job of turning around the Tornadoes’ boys the past two years while continuing to rack up wins. Now, he is on the verge of an impressive milestone.
Shaneyfelt is two wins from reaching 700 in his career (girls and boys combined). He can reach that plateau this week if Clearwater is able to beat Osceola on Friday and Wharton on Saturday.
“The number (700) is a nice one,” Shaneyfelt said. “Some people have mentioned it this year. What’s big, at least for me with that number, is that I’ve been able to do it in 30 years.
“But this is not a personal accomplishment by any means. It has a lot more to do with having great players and tremendous support throughout the years.”
An Indiana native, Shaneyfelt started his coaching career with the girls program at Osceola (1986-92) before coming to Clearwater in 1993. He quickly turned the program into one of the best in the state. His 650 wins combined at both schools in girls basketball rank as the best in Pinellas County and among the top 20 in the state.
For the past three seasons, Shaneyfelt has coached the Tornadoes’ boys. He has guided the team to a 14-3 record this season, one of the best starts in years.
