Southeastern University women’s basketball coach Jody Martinez will be one of 48 members of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Victory Club award recipients for the 2015 season.
The WBCA Victory Club Award is presented annually to each WBCA-member head coach who achieves career wins of 200, 300, 400, 500 or more, in 100-victory increments, during the current season.
On January 27th, Martinez recorded his 400th career victory with an 85-44 win at Trinity Baptist College. He won his first 384 games of his career at Bethel College (Ind.). “The first thing that comes to mind is the dedication of my assistant coaches, former players, and managers,” said Martinez of the accomplishment. “Seventeen years kind of goes by quick, but it was a special moment.”
In his first season at Southeastern, Martinez guided the Fire to a 25-7 record and their first appearance t the NAIA Division II National Tournament. For his efforts, Martinez was named The Sun Conference Coach of the Year.
Martinez is one of 10 coaches to achieve career win 400 this year including Sherri Coale at Oklahoma, Robin Pingeton of Missouri, and Karl Smesko of Florida Gulf Coast.
All of these coaches will be formally recognized during the Fifth Annual WBCA Awards Show, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, in Tampa. This event is part of the WBCA National Convention and is held in conjunction with the NCAA Women’s Final Four.
