Oviedo gave longtime coach, Ed Kershner his 900th career victory with a 67-53 home court win vs. DeLand in a Class 9A boys basketball region quarterfinal.
“I’m honored, privileged and fortunate,” Kershner said of the milestone, a first for Florida high school basketball. “I was more concerned about the game than any of this other stuff. The kids really showed their composure and I’m proud of them. This team never gives up.”
Senior guard Ivan Smith started slowly, but scored 12 of his game-high 15 points in the second half for Oviedo (20-7).
“He’s [Smith] going to answer the bell whenever,” Kershner said.
DeLand (17-11) led 18-15 after the first quarter, but Oviedo’s balanced scoring proved to be too much to handle. Miguel Lopez and Aidan Knight joined Smith in double figures with 11 and 10 points. Morgan Mitchell and Earl Baker each had 8.
DeLand point guard Brodgie Gordon made three 3-point shots in the first half and led his team with 15 points. Wyatt Hollmann added 9 points.
