The Culligan City of Palms Classic, set to begin its 42nd annual high school basketball tournament on Dec. 18, has hired a new executive director.
John Naylor, a south Lee County resident, will assist the elite, national-caliber high school event in securing sponsorships and hotel rooms for more than 16 visiting teams the week before Christmas. The tournament, which has alumni scattered across the NBA and major Division I college basketball, has an annual budget of about $250,000.
“We think he’s a good, strong person for this,” said Rusty Whitley, Classic Basketball, Inc.’s treasurer and the head of the search committee. The previous director, Ron Riley, resigned earlier this year. “We think he’ll continue to work and improve on what Ron Riley did.”
Naylor serves on the Board of Directors of the Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors of the Lee County Hotel Association and the Advisory Board of the Resort Hospitality Management program at FGCU.
A founding member of the Lee County Sports Organizing Committee in 1992, Naylor has been a strong advocate for sports in Lee County, Whitley said.
“We had people from all parts of the country apply,” said Whitley, who received more than 50 applications.
