Proud alum Dave Martinson is new Boone basketball coach
The home of the Braves has long been the consummate comfort zone for Dave Martinson, whose family ties to Boone High run deep.
Add another layer to the legacy now that the former Braves football and basketball player has been named head boys basketball coach for a historic Orlando school his parents, brothers and sister attended – along with an uncle, two aunts and three cousins.
Martinson, 35, served for seven seasons as the Braves junior varsity coach and was also a varsity assistant the past five years after beginning his coaching career at Freedom.
“For me, it’s personally, this is the ultimate goal,” Martinson said on Friday. “To give back to my alma mater. The goal was always to get back to Boone.”
He replaces Greg Shirley, who left after five seasons to become basketball coach for Brentwood, Tenn.
Boone was 21-10 and a surprise region finalist last season
“Coach Shirley left the program in an outstanding position,” Martinson said. “For me, it’s really good timing.”
Martinson played basketball under coach Mark Rickman for four seasons and football for two under Phil Ziglar at Boone before attending UCF.
