Through three quarters Friday, it looked like a four-day run of sunshine was about to come to an end for the Madison Memorial boys basketball team.

But some pressure defense, some terrific free throw shooting — and a bad break for their opponent — allowed the Spartans to storm back.

Memorial went on a 20-4 run in the fourth quarter to rally past Cincinnati La Salle 43-38 in the championship game of the 16-team Kingdom of the Sun tournament in Ocala, Florida.

The Spartans (8-2) won four games in four days to take the tournament title.

La Salle (6-2) opened a 35-23 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Memorial coach Steve Collins turned loose a pressure defense after La Salle lost its leading player, guard C.J. Fleming, to a third-quarter shoulder injury.

A series of turnovers and easy scores resulted, including a dunk and a fast-break layup by Robert Bennett that tied the score at 32 with 5 minutes, 28 seconds left.

Another steal led to an offensive rebound and a three-point play for Memorial big man Chris Knight, giving the Spartans a 35-32 lead. Memorial made six of eight free throws down the stretch.

Knight finished with 13 points and Logan Knecht scored all seven of his points in the fourth quarter for Memorial.
Fleming totaled 13 points for La Salle and Riley Haubner added 10, including a pair of 3-point baskets that were the Lancers’ only points of the fourth quarter.
