6A: Dillard Advances to 6A Title Game

Jordan Wright scored 19 points to help Fort Lauderdale Dillard survive mediocre shooting and advance to the Class 6A championship game with a 56-44 victory over Deltona on Friday night.

The Panthers (27-5) relied on defense to win their 19th straight game, holding Deltona to 33 percent shooting (15-for-46) and taking high scorers Evan and Blake Hinson out of their games.

“That’s the way we play,” said senior point guard Dijon Farquharson, who came off the bench with 11 points and three assists. “Our defensive plan was to push them out to the 3-point line so they can’t get comfortable shots, and it worked.”

Evan Hinson led Deltona (25-10) with 10 points, but he shot 3-for-16. Freshman Blake Hinson had nine points before fouling out with 4:24 remaining.

Dillard will play Largo in Saturday’s final at 1:30 p.m.

The Panthers shot only 37 percent, but took command of the game in the second quarter and led thereafter.

“We didn’t play that well, but we kind of took some shots away from them,” said Darryl Burrows, who is in his his 23rd season as Dillard coach. “We knew we would have the advantage on the glass and we knew we’d probably be able to run a little bit and we didn’t do a great job of that.

“We saw that Largo likes to run, so we know we’re going to have to get up and down the floor.”

Raiquan Gray had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Panthers, who last won a state championship in 2008.

Dillard fell behind by four points early, but Wright and Farquharson scored six points each in a big second quarter and the Panthers surged ahead 28-18 late in the first half.

Deltona went scoreless for almost four minutes as four different players scored for Dillard at the outset of the second period.
