2A: Undefeated Grandview Prep Advances to Finals

Undefeated Grandview Prep found itself behind at halftime for the first time all season in Tuesday’s Class 2A semifinal against Orlando Christian Prep. But there was no sense of panic because the Pride knew it could have been worse.

“Going into halftime we knew we were very fortunate to be down two, shooting 1-for-15 from the 3-point line,” said guard Jacob Schner. “We knew if we came out better in the second half it could be different game.

Grandview Prep surged ahead in the third quarter and went on to win 62-54, setting up Wednesday’s championship game at 8:05 against Bradenton Christian.

Juwan Frazier led the Pride (33-0) with 24 points, including 13-of-13 foul shooting, and Shawn Occeus contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Damon Harge, who led Orlando Christian (20-13) with 20 points, and Cameron Corcoran opened the game with 3-pointers for the Warriors, who grabbed an early eight-point lead and confused Grandview with a tough zone defense.

Grandview shot 6 of 29 overall in the first half, but when Kenneth Nwachukwu and Eric Snow closed out the first half with four straight free throws, the Pride were down by only 22-20.

“Give them credit. They had a great defensive game plan and took us out of what we normally do,” said Grandview coach Joe Dawson. “For our guys to come through and stay together, that’s the sign of a good team.”

Occeus scored eight points on a 12-3 run to start the second half for Grandview, which shot better than 50 percent in the second half.

The Pride led by 13 with just over two minutes left before a couple of 3-pointers by Cesar Barrios sparked a Warriors’ rally. But Frazier made eight straight free throws in the final 40 seconds to clinch it for Grandview.
