March madness Update for Girls State playoffs

The FABC made a presentation to the FHSAA Athletic directors Advisory committee on moving the girls state basketball playoffs to the first weekend in March  with the boys  to follow the following weekend. Myself & Oviedo coach Ed Kershner each talked about the reasons why this should take place for the 2016-17 season. The FHSAA moved the season back one week but to guarantee “March Madness” 2 weeks was the magic number. The overlap with volleyball & girls hoops, football & boys hoops is absolutely ridiculous. 42 of the 50 states have Madness in March. It’s embarrassing to say our playoffs are over February 21st & we are #2 in the USA in finishing up our state playoffs. The FABC is not giving up this proposal and are pursuing other avenues to accomplish this goal. Almost every girls coach wants this to happen that we contacted. We are revising a 4 page color brochure that we printed up for the presentation. We are restructuring  the booklet for the fight to make this happen  for the 2017-18 campaign. Please send us your thoughts on this as we feel we must voice concerns that hurt the sport we all love. We will send all members the new brochure in mid-summer as we do more research.

Job Openings Hit Century Mark Plus

There have been 141 job openings in boys & girls basketball in the sunshine state on the high school, junior college, and college levels. The past four years have been mind-boggling as the 200+ mark has been reached the past 4 years with a record breaking 250 last year.  We are only in mid-June so I look for a lot of activity in July & early august.  This is not a great sign for coaching longevity in our state.

The FABC Website Has Improved

A special thanks to our website director Alan Darty of Oviedo for updating the FABC website with the Coach & Player of the Year award winners plus the King & Queen of the Court winners. All the awards were sponsored by Bob Evans Restaurants and a poster will be displayed in Polk & Broward County restaurants this year which is the home base of Tony Bradley (University of North Carolina) and Kiki Harrigan (University of South Carolina). If you know of any corporate business sponsors that love basketball, please send their contact information along and we will follow up. See a list of our sponsors that have assisted the FABC on our website. If you have any player, coach, or stories on your team please send them along & we will post on our web site. Please include a picture if you have one (landscape mode).

Classified Announcements a Huge Success & Great Benefit for Members Only.

The FABC classified announcements  to fill games & tournaments had another successful year at an incredible 90% success rate. The key is that we deliver directly through the head coach. Some examples in emergency situations have turned from a negative to a positive. A school named a head coach in August. The new coach had to fill 11 games. In 24 hours, he had the job completed in “Miracle Fashion”.

Another coach had a team drop out in a pre-Christmas tourney on a Friday with the event starting on Monday. She had 3 schools call in a 15 minute period. She could not believe the FABC pulled this off in such a short period of time. We have in the past helped out non-members at a charge of $10 but that was changed by the Board to not honor their request.

It is only fair to make members a priority. Lastly, a school in Southwest Florida had a team pull out of a pre-season classic on Monday at Noon for a Tuesday night game & had it filled that same afternoon the request was made.
