Southeastern University Director of Athletics Drew Watson has announced the hiring of Leann Dahlstein as interim head coach of the Fire women’s basketball team.

Dahlstein is no stranger to SEU, having spent the 2012-13 season as a graduate assistant with the Fire, helping the team go 18-14 and reach the NCCAA Division I South Region Championship game. She replaces Jody Martinez, who resigned on July 28th to accept a position as assistant coach at the University of Illinois.

“Leann knows the women’s basketball program and the university well so she is a good fit for the interim position,” said Watson. “I have confidence that she will work hard to continue the development of this program and invest in the lives of our players.”

For the past two seasons, Dahlstein has served as the head coach at Central Christian College in Moberly, Missouri. Last season, the Canal Fulton, Ohio native was named the NCCAA Division II National Coach of the Year, leading the Saints to their first 20-win season. The Saints advanced all the way to the NCCAA Division II title game before bowing out to top-seeded Arlington Baptist.

“It’s a little surreal to have the chance to come back to Southeastern,” said Dahlstein. “I loved it when I was there and I’m really excited and anxious to get started. I’m blessed to have the opportunity to be part of the community and culture there.”

During Dahlstein’s tenure, Central Christian amassed a 37-21 record, and have had five players honored as NCCAA All-Americans.

Last season, the Fire finished 25-7 and made their first appearance in the NAIA Division II National Tournament.
