Head boys basketball coach Jared Owen’s first chance to lead came four years ago in Niceville, receiving the keys to the Rocky Bayou program.

Quickly, he transform the program from winning one game his first season, to earning the Knights their first ever district title in 2014.

Thursday, Owen announced he’s now moving on to his second job, heading back to the place he calls home, coaching the team he played high school ball for at Poplar Springs.

While being home schooled growing up in Chipley, Owen played for the Atomics in his junior and senior seasons in the early 2000’s.

Coach said he wasn’t looking to leave Rocky Bayou and he was very happy in Okaloosa County. He just couldn’t pass up a chance to return to a place that helped shape the man he is today.

“This is I guess what you would call a dream job. Eric Smith, he is the girl’s coach now, he was the guy’s coach back then. He left a huge impression on my life. And he’s the reason that I’m actually coaching today because after I graduated, he asked me if I was interested in helping him the next season, while I was going over to (attend school) at Chipola. It’s exciting to be going back home to lead the program. I never thought that I would get this opportunity to be honest with you.”
