Lake Wales has hired former Winter Haven coach Don Grant as the new head basketball, replacing Randy Lee who was forced to resign in March.
Grant, a retired Winter Haven police officer who was the long-time school resource officer at Winter Haven High School, is a Lake Wales graduate. During his time at Winter Haven, he spent time as an assistant football coach, junior varsity basketball coach and assistant basketball coach before replacing Jim Morrison as head coach. He led the Blue Devils to the playoffs three times, including back-to-back appearances in the state tournament in 2003 and 2004 when the Blue Devils finished as state runners-up.
About 70 applications for the position were received. The pool was whittled down to 14 then to seven. The final candidates were all interviewed on Monday. Grant was one of four applicants who interviewed for the position, and his selection was unanimous among the selection committee. Lake Wales athletic director Marvin Pavy said two more interviews were set up, but the candidates withdrew prior to the interview. Another interview that was going to be done via Skype fell through because of technical issues. The interview was going to be rescheduled for today, but the decision to choose Grant had already been made.
