Linc Darner had never been to Green Bay, Wis., before Sunday.

That’s when he boarded a plane and went to visit the city and talk to the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay about their men’s basketball head coach position.

When he left Green Bay on Monday, the school had a new coach and Florida Southern College had to find a replacement for the first time in nine years.

Darner was hired as the new coach of NCAA Division I Wisconsin-Green Bay less than three weeks after winning the Division II national championship. The hiring was made public Tuesday, though details of the contract were not released.

“It wasn’t easy,” said Darner, who told his team about the move during a meeting on campus on Tuesday. “It’s a group of guys that I’m very fond of and that I care deeply about. They’ve done great things not only as players but as people. They’re part of my family. Any time you have to do this, it’s never easy. A few of the returning guys took it hard, but they understand the opportunity that I have. It’s one you can’t pass up.”

After the meeting, at least one of the senior returning Mocs, Dylan Travis, took to Twitter and conveyed his emotion.

“Can’t knock coach Darner tho, chasing his dreams. Best coach I’ve ever played for no doubt, wish him nothing but the best!” Travis tweeted.

Departing senior guard Tyler Kelly, who spent all four years at Florida Southern under Darner, said the team was very aware of the speculation that started Friday when Darner’s name first was linked to the Wisconsin-Green Bay opening.
