Seffner Christian Academy named Joe Cooper, a former assistant coach at Briarcrest Christian High in Memphis, Tennessee, as its girls varsity basketball coach.
Cooper replaces Greg Fawbush, who stepped down in March after leading the Crusaders to their second consecutive Class 3A state championship game appearance. Fawbush, the only coach the program had known, resigned after 20 seasons to spend more time with his family.
Cooper helped Briarcrest win two state titles during his three years with the program. He also has 20 years of experience coaching AAU in Tennessee and Florida.
“We’re excited to have coach Cooper coming on board to lead our girls basketball program,’’ athletic director Andy Holmes said. “He is well respected in the girls basketball community and he possesses the exact skill set we were looking for to ensure our girls program continues to have the type of success it had under coach Greg Fawbush.”
The Crusaders went 27-5 last season and were the No. 2-ranked team in 3A the past two seasons. SCA also was ranked one of the top 10 teams in Florida.
Since 2011, the team has made four state final four appearances.
