Boca Raton went unbeaten to claim the championship at the Akerman LLP Holiday Classic in Miami.

The Bobcats defeated Tampa-Brooks DeBartolo 89-83 in the championship game on Monday. Senior guard Casey Southards had 39 points and senior guard Tyrique Young added 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks to lead Boca Raton (6-6), which finished 3-0 at the tournament.

Brooks DeBartolo was 10-1 heading into the championship game.

Southards was named the tournament MVP. Young was selected to the first team, and junior guard Morgan Zook was named to the second team.

“Winning a quality tournament and beating a state-ranked team is huge for our confidence going into the second half of the season,” Boca Raton coach Max Spinner said. “We lost five games in a row prior to the tournament. All were one-possession games in the last minute, and in the first three we gave up double-figure leads.

“I believe we have learned a lot from those losses and winning three straight close games will go a long way when it comes to winning close games in the second half of the season.”
